About Us

Threlkeld Village Hall was originally built in 1901 on land donated by a local landowner, Squire Crozier, who also founded the village school. In 2010 a local campaign raised funds to refurbish the hall to bring it up to the high standards required by today’s users, featuring full wheelchair accessibility, modern catering and lighting, and comfortable seating. As part of the refurbishment, a coffee shop was added to the building with the vision that the profits would make the village hall financially self-sustaining in perpetuity.

Building work was completed in 2014 and Threlkeld Coffee Shop has established itself as a popular venue for locals and visitors alike with its focus on quality food and drink, and its friendly welcome to all. The village hall remains at the centre of village life, maintained in excellent condition in part by the income from the coffee shop.

The Village Hall is managed by the Threlkeld Village Hall Trust, a charity with local residents on the managing committee who are all volunteers. The Committee Members organise on-going maintenance, oversee the finances and make decisions about what projects to support when finances allow. This includes supporting local organisations which use the hall and benefit the local  community. We are always looking for volunteers to join the committee or help us. The Coffee Shop at the rear of the hall building is set up as a “Community Interest Company” run on a commercial basis with professional staff, but wholly owned by the Threlkeld Village Hall Trust. A separate Board of Directors (also all volunteers) oversees the Coffee Shop operations and finances. One of the board members also sits on the Village Hall Trust committee. Most profits are given to the Village Hall, although some may be given directly to local community activities such as the school and sporting activities.

Two other voluntary groups are associated with the Village Hall: Threlkeld Young People and Threlkeld Events. 

Threlkeld Young People provide an umbrella organisation for activities which take place in the hall which benefit children. In particular the Youth Club and The Brownies. The Youth Club regularly receives financial assistance from the Village Hall Trust to cover the costs of professional fees of Youth Workers for the Youth Club.

Threlkeld Events organises a programme of walks, talks, music and drama aimed at adults. Each year around 18 events will take place covering a diverse range of music (Folk, Jazz, Classical, Country, Brass), drama productions from travelling theatre companies and talks of interest to local people. In the summer months Threlkeld Events organise guided local walks with some particular theme, for example, flowers, fungi or the local history of mining. Threlkeld Events can also support other groups in the hall that benefit local people and have in the past helped get a yoga class going until it was commercially viable. Currently it is organising and supporting, where necessary, a regular keep-fit class.  Threlkeld Events is entirely run by volunteers.
